Motorcycle Intercom Systems
In the words of far too many BT ads "its good to talk". And though bikers are by their very nature a sociable bunch (we nod to strangers!) when it comes to chatting whilst riding helmets and 90mph wind roar make things difficult. So if you want to to talk to fellow bikers, pillions or listen to music whilst riding then you'll need to consider a motorcycle intercom.
There are a host of companies who supply a variety of different models to suit different functional needs and budgets. You can spend as little as a tenner (hell, you can even make your own) or if you want superb clarity and hands-free control you could be looking at a bill running to several hundred pounds.
As ever this guide is based on my personal experience that will grow over time. To start the ball rolling I'm just going to list all the different models and suppliers I've come across. I can't profess to have tried all the models on offer but those I haven't sampled for myself I've done my best to locate reviews from the web to help you in your decision
Before making your decision on which bike intercom to buy, you should first identify exactly what you're looking for from the technology. Asking yourself the following questions is a useful starting point:
Do you only want to be able to speak to a pillion passenger or do you want to be able to talk bike-to-bike?
Do you also want to be able to listen to music through the helmet speakers?
Do you want to be able to answer your mobile phone via the system?
Are you overly concerned about wires and installation? Would you prefer a wireless bluetooth intercom?
Will you run the intercom system from its own battery power or from the main loom of the bike?
Do you want to one or two-way communication? Do you want the wife in your ear all day? Does she want you in hers??
What type/make of helmet do you wear? Open face or full-face, some offer proprietary systems
How often do you plan on using this? Daily (perhaps you're a motorcycle instructor), perhaps once a month for longer Sunday rides, or can you only seeing yourself using the intercom once a year for the annual ride to the Nurburgring
