"I finally fitted the lovely Akrapovic Evolution titanium full race system. I spent a sweaty Saturday fitting a Power Commander and then the ‘Akra’ system. It all went easily enough, the hardest bit of fitting a Power Commander is getting the connectors off the injectors.

The results One hundred and eighteen horsepower, measured at the rear tyre on Carbontek’s Fuchs dyno, a gain of 6.2bhp over stock. Six horse power doesn’t sound like much for your £1200. But there’s a weight saving – the ‘Akra’ weighs just 4.6kg in total versus 10.3kg for stock. It goes without saying that there’s a lovely yowl from the Akrapovic too – at the end of the Hangar straight it sounded like a Typhoon fighter bomber swooping down onto a Nazi armoured column.

Fitting info: Fitting the exhaust is pretty straightforward. You have to deactivate the exhaust valve motor with a wee plate, which is fiddly on a UK bike (as an anti theft plates covers the ECU and partially obscures the motor). After that, its just a case of removing the seat unit, fairing lowers, pegs and old pipe. Fit the new ‘un with all the springs and stuff. There’s a replacement bracket arrangement for the rear end which takes a bit of unscrewing, but there’s nothing requiring a MotoGP technician to be honest. "

"Quality doesn’t come cheap, just ask Chelsea. Quality means expense in the motorcycle world too, not least the exhaust market. A full system can range from £200 up to £2,000 for the full fancy titanium racing systems. At the top end of the market comes this company, Akrapovic. Supplier to all the top race teams, including HRC, Aprilia and Kawasaki. Its renowned for its top-spec materials and big power gains. The Slovenian company has been producing exhausts since 1990 when a motorcycle tuner called Igor Akrapovic decided he would try his hand at bending tubes of metal. Now 14 years later the company employs over 140 people making one of the leading brands of exhaust system on the market. This system has been on Neil’s Kawasaki ZX-6R for the last six months and he’s most impressed with its performance.

Being a sneaky bugger I got my order in before the rest of the office as Akrapovic is most sought after here. It looks the dog’s wotsits and saves 5kgs in weight over the standard system. Performance wise its boosted the ZX6’s power by five horses to 111bhp so I was well impressed. The sound is distinctively Akrapovic, deep and piercing as the revs rise, but it isn’t painfully loud.

For your money you get brushed stainless steel header tubes and link pipes and a choice of carbon fibre or titanium for the oval end can. Oh and an unmistakable big red scorpion sticker on the can. On the ZX-6R there’s virtually no difference in power up until 9,000rpm when all hell is let loose all the way to the 13,000rpm limiter. Ideal for racers and track day riders, who spend most of their time in the highest echelons of the rev range. "

"TTS Performance Engineering recommend an Akrapovic four into one exhaust system for the Blackbird. It is road legal but the baffle can be taken out for track days. Prefer to retain the twin rear pipes? Akrapovic offer an alternative system fro track use only with slip-on cans marrying to the stock Honda piping and costing £665 plus VAT. TTS claim the founr0into-one would add about 15bhp to the top end and 25 percent more mid-range stomp."

"Should you be lucky enough to own a 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6RR you’ll want to take notice of this fancy titanium slip-on system. Not only does it sound and look the tits, but it also saves those precious kilos from the standard can. It claims a three bhp increase in the peak power (compared to the 14bhp of the full system) and should boost power everywhere through the range. The can is available in titanium or carbon fibre with a stainless or titanium link pipe. "

"So the Fazer’s got this shiny new Akrapovic exhaust. It looks stunning. The whole thing weighs two kilos less than the standard silencer, plus I’ve junked the brackets which supported the old header pipes and collector box. The Akrapovic fitted effortlessly, and with the Power Commander remapped to suit it makes an extra 10nhp a 6500rpm, 10bhp at the top end – 142.2bhp now – and with increases everywhere else. Losing the EXUP valve has lost no midrange or low down power. That’s not what they’re there for these days, its all emissions related. Noise isn’t increased because the baffle is firmly in place. Its no small change though – this conical full system costs £831. "

"This full titanium system from Akrapovic will add another 12nhp to your 2007 R1 and lop 3kg from its overall weight. Slip-on cans will cost £810 a pair and a stainless full system £1317. The systems come with removable baffles but they aren’t road legal. "
